With Thanksgiving right around the corner many of us have already started thinking about Christmas (whether we want to or not). For us Christmas decorations and music don't being until the day after Thanksgiving, which was a tradition in my household growing up and one that I've continued with my own children. World Maps are so exciting to explore. The best way to engage a student learning about the world, is to ask them to label it. Activity Ideas

Looking for ways to make the Mini Peel & Play World Map interactive? Use these activities: Label the oceans - use the labels to point out oceans around the globe. Ask your student to match the sticker with its continent. What does your student see in that continent? What is the climate there? Is that continent above or below the equator? After your student has placed all the sticker labels on the globe, s/he can refer to the map while responding to these writing prompts:

• Name all of the oceans in the world.
• Locate your home on the map. If you wanted to visit Australia, which direction would you need to travel?
• How would you travel to Europe - by foot, by boat, or by plane?
• Which direction does a ship need to sail to travel from South America to Africa?

When you get to the site, you'll see some featured resources. Use the menu on the left side of the home page to explore: 

• Articles – Enjoy science articles (that can easily be used as lessons) on topics such as: Air & Space, Earth Science, Health & Safety, Energy, Water, and more. Place your cursor over the topics to see a drop-down menu of related articles. All of the articles include fascinating information and are linked to experiments students can do to demonstrate the concepts covered in the articles.

As technology becomes more prevalent in our daily lives with the creation of kindles and tablets e-books have become quite popular. Libraries are still very important and we shouldn't neglect them, but for those days when you or the kids are sick, snowed in, or rained out turning to online library sources can be extremely helpful and necessary.

I came across Open Library about 2 years ago and I love it. I've found a lot of great books for myself as well as the kids. They have over 1,000,000 e-book titles to choose from! You can read them on kindle, the computer, tablet and smartphone.

If you haven't had a chance to check it out, please do so, you won't regret it.

• Two cups of plain flour
• One cup of salt
• Two cups of water
• Two teaspoons of cream of tartar

The idea behind Spell Up, a new word game and Chrome Experiment is that it helps you improve your English using your voice—and a modern browser, of course. It’s like a virtual spelling bee, with a twist.
The goal of the game is to correctly spell the words you hear and stack them to build the highest word tower you can—letter by letter, word by word. The higher the tower gets, the more difficult the word challenges: You’ll be asked to pronounce words correctly, solve word jumbles and guess mystery words. You can earn bonuses and coins to level up faster.



Google worked with game designers and teachers to make Spell Up both fun and educational, and they encourage teachers to try it in the classroom. Spell Up works best in Chrome on your computer and on Android phones and tablets. (It also works on iPhones and iPads, but you’ll need to type rather than talk.) Whether you’re just learning English or you’re already a pro, check it out!

One of the questions we get asked the most is, "what curriculum do I need?" Let me just say that there is no right or wrong way to home school. The first step is to check the state home school education standards where you live and from there you the parent are able to customize the curriculum to fit each child.
The important thing to remember here is don't try to make it like public school! Think about why you are home schooling or have taken your child out of the public education system. Whether your child is a gifted learner or just needs some one on one help, you get to help them achieve their best learning experience because as their parent you know them best.


There are tons of boxed curriculum out there to pick and choose from and with a plethora of online schools popping up everywhere it is easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the options available. But it is alright to pick and choose, to think outside of the boxed curriculum and gather resources from across the internet, used bookstores, etc. Some of the best resources I have found are available for free online, which is what Home School Freesource is about. But I have also found great textbooks, workbooks, etc at a local salvage store. So sometimes you find what you need in the most unlikely of places.

Don't feel discouraged mama, just remember each child/family is different and not everything will work for everyone.
